English Repair Solutions has been in business since 2000 while I was a
postdoc at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA, working for
Professor David B. Goodin investigating site-directed mutants of cytochrome
c peroxidase in efforts to understand the catalytic mechanisms of oxygen
activation by heme enzymes.
About the Editor: Mark P. Roach, Ph.D.
I obtained my Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of South Carolina in
1997 under the direction of Professor John H. Dawson. My research focused on
structure-function relationships of heme proteins with a particular emphasis on
structural characterization of heme coordination structure by magnetic circular
dichroism spectroscopy. I also acted as an editorial assistant to Professor
Dawson who is also the chief editor of the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry.
After finishing my Ph.D., I was granted a two-year
postdoctoral fellowship from the Japan Society for the
Promotion of Science and worked in the laboratory of
Professor Yoshihito Watanabe at the Okazaki National
Research Institutes' Institute for Molecular Science.
During my years in Japan, I became aware of the significant
hurdles encountered by non-native English speaking
researchers who wish to publish their research in English.
By the time I had completed of my postdoctoral appointment at Scripps, I had published several papers in journals
such as Biochemistry, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Chemical Reviews, Acta Crystallographica,
Coordination Chemistry Reviews, Accounts of Chemical Research and the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry.
I recognized at this point that I enjoyed the strategic aspects of science
writing and publishing.
I made a career change and took a position as a technical writer in the
patent department of Isis Pharmaceuticals in Carlsbad, California.
I qualified as a U.S. patent agent in 2003 and continued to work at Isis,
managing the patent portfolio of a new biosensor technology based on
measurement of genetic signatures of PCR products of bacteria and
viruses by mass spectrometry.
This technology later became the basis for a new company, IBIS
Biosciences, which was acquired by Abbott Biosciences in early 2009.
I returned to Canada in 2006 and joined the Ottawa office of Ridout & Maybee LLP, an intellectual property
boutique law firm. I acquired experience in preparation and prosecution of Canadian patent applications for a
wide range of technologies.
I left Ridout & Maybee LLP in April, 2009 and started
Skyline Scientific, a consulting company with an emphasis
on patent preparation and strategic patent portfolio
management.
I live in the village of Wakefield, Quebec, located in the Gatineau Hills north of Ottawa, the capital of Canada with my wife
Shannon. In my spare time, I enjoy pursuing a variety of seasonal outdoor activities including mountain biking, trail
running, canoeing and fishing in the warmer seasons with cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.
